SEMINAR DESCRIPTION

This course will surface the ways in which LGBTQ+ people and communities have impacted the ways in which mainstream American culture has been shaped by cultural production derived from thinking that challenges heteronormativity in post-World War II America until the validation of same sex marriage in 2014 Through the lenses of queer theory, evolving queer history, Since the emergence of “homosexuality” and “transsexuality” as identities in the late 19th century, queer culture has been presumed to develop in the margins of American life, ancillary to and shaped by heterosexual norms. Yet, the vast majority of queer people in the last hundred years have lived (to at least some degree) in the closet, allowing them to exist in the mainstream while maintaining a distinctly non-normative identity. Thus, to quote bell hooks, allowing them "to bring the margin into the center." In 15 meetings over the course of the semester, through lectures, discussions, texts, slides, films and video, we will explore the ways in which transformative integration of queer designs for living have occurred. Highlighting pivotal events and shifts in American cultural, political, and creative history this course will provide food for thought about the ways in queerness is integral to American notions of progress and freedom.

SamU. January 23, 2024 - "The Homosexuals"

  • People who were homosexual were considered monsters, an enigma, embarrassing, disgusting.

  • Quoted to be “more harmful to society than adultery, abortion, and prostitution”.

  • That their way of life is harmful and poses a threat to a society’s cultures and norms.

  • Despite practicing their own private matters in the security of their own homes, they should still be criminalized and prosecuted.

  • Many psychologists have tried to find an explanation as to what makes a person gay, trying to pinpoint the blame onto the parents. Perhaps the mother was too involved in their son’s life while the father was the opposite, meaning the son would have less sense of masculinity.

  • Many psychologists deem being gay as a “condition” that can be cured with strict conversion methods.

  • Many men have stopped hanging out with each other during bar breaks and poker nights in fear they will be viewed as too “buddy buddy” thus leading to the conclusion that they are gay.

  • Throughout the documentary, we have been exclusively talking about gay men without a single mention about gay women, trans and/or drag people.

  • Cops would play as a decoy out on the streets at night near popular gay bars to try and capture and arrest any man who approached them.

  • One of the gay men they continuously interviewed throughout the report made it clear that being gay wasn’t a choice, that they were born gay just as how a person can be born blonde. They have no choice in being born gay, or blonde, and thus should not be mistreated for that reason.

The CBS report on “The Homosexuals'' from 1967 provides a window into how society has viewed the LGBTQ+ community back then with no filters. They didn't need filters as they felt that what they thought about the gay community was correct. Even as the community has voiced numerous times about how these statements are hurtful towards them, how they feel fear when someone finds out they are gay, how they fear they will be arrested, beaten, kicked out, fired, just for their sexual orientation, they are disregarded for their feelings. Throughout the report, the community has been deemed an enigma, called monsters, embarrassing, “more harmful to society than adultery, abortion, and prostitution.” That they deserve to be criminalized as they pose a threat to society’s culture. That what is deemed right and wrong will be confused with the ideologies of the gay community being inserted.

Many times they have tried to pinpoint the source and reason as to why people are “becoming” gay. They would blame the parents for the environment they were raised in, saying that the mother was too involved and controlling of their son's lives, which gave them more of an effeminate identity. As well as the lack of a fatherly figure being present in their lives contributing to their lack of masculinity. And thus with this lack of masculinity, they seek to make up for it by looking for sexual relationships with other men, as many “experienced” psychiatrists have stated in their own words. And said “experienced” psychiatrists have also stated that people who are gay have a “condition” that can be cured with extensive conversion methods.

Yet, the discrimination doesn’t stop here. After being called monsters, disturbed, sick in the head, people who have a different sexual orientation from the norm can now be criminalized, even if they practice their acts in the privacy of their own homes. Couples who hide away and live together in private for years to the point you can consider them “married” legally can't be married as it was also criminalized. Being gay being seen as a crime has caused a sense of distrust within big groups of men as they fear that if they are seen together enjoying a night out at poker or the bar, then they will be suspected of being gay. Many friendships have been broken because of this. It was also interesting to see that throughout this report, many of the instances and examples they have covered to explain the “crisis” of homesexuality in America have all solely talked about men. Never once have they talked about women and lesbians or even trans or drag people. It’d be interesting to see why they excluded other parties under the umbrella of the LGBTQ+ community, but hopefully we will cover more about these groups in the upcoming weeks.
